“Arara do mato”, forest spider

December 17, 2009

I took advantage of the trip to Entre Rios, BA, for the banking business to make a short side trip to a patch of Atlantic forest. One new (to me, that is) species of trees and one new spider sp. have been discovered. The local name of the spider is ‘arara do mato’ (arara=parrot of the forest). I’ve collected the spider and am working on its identification. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have a look at this beauty!

Hey man, here in Buenos Aires, Argentina also have this one.
I have seen on a garden a Big One over a large web.

It looks very similar to the larger types of banana spiders/ golden silk orb-weavers I have seen in Florida. I spent some time in the deep swamps of FL and found one approximately 12-14 inches and it looked exactly like the one you have posted.
